| sorry, guys, but the last post is too complicated to explain here. maybe later. sooo.......we fly home three months from today! (for two months)
it'll be nice to be back in the states for awhile. i'm planning on going to mi ranchito every day for the first week. of course, i'm also planning on going to wendy's, frozen d's, cajun sam's (does it still exist), mean pig bbq, nan's for chocolate chip cookies, lisa's for salad w/ strawberry vinagrette, mazzio's for deep dish combo, and, of course, the new super china buffet (just kidding).
liz walters gets married on august 6th for the rest of you who never hear from her. zach and ashley are moving to china with us next year. audrey's got a little baby. evan and mia get hitched june 26th (yeah, it's a sunday) in little rock). michael martin gets married in virginia in july. jess and i are having a baby (just kidding, sorry, i know that's not funny). cassie, landon, becky, and a trove of others have gone to italy for a semester and returned. jeff and jon ireland both have girlfriends. apparently, people's lives continue moving whether we're there or not.
BUT WE'LL BE THERE SOON.
on a local note: things are going really really well here. i'm Studying with seven young men at different times during the week. our local Family is growing, and we're really feeling like we're going to be filling up the old bathtub a couple of times this semester. apparently, there's something to this 'prayer' thing. we're really excited about z and a coming here next year with us. it'll be nice to have some old friends around.
drop a line and let me know what's going on. feel free to email pics, we miss seeing what's happening around the world. as usual, you can see our pics at http://community.webshots.com/user/billjessinchina .
| i don't speak much chinese. i can get away with the basics, but i don't have time to learn much more than that. however, i do know that someone's talking about me when they're pointing at me and smiling while visiting with their friends. do i like the attention? yes. do i like not knowing what they're saying? no.
something else......i read a hypothesis that the six days of creation could be interpreted literally as six, 24-hour days, if you assume that the perspective of time is from the border of the expanding universe after inflation. that would fit the time into a natural log scale against itself (but from a different perspective), allowing the Bible's six, 24-hour days to equal science's 16 billion years. for more, see einstein's theory of special relativity, greene's "the fabric of the cosmos", schroeder's "science of god", and God's "Genesis". or you can ask me.
| it's been about 6 weeks, so here i am. jess and i are in singapore for a couple weeks. we've just returned from a week in bali as a little sub-vacation. we went on a couple of dives while we were there. i've decided that diving is going to become one my new passions. i always forget how much i love it until i do it again. (for those who might be misunderstanding me, i'm not talking about swan dives and cannonballs; i'm talking about scuba diving.) anyway, great things are going on here in singapore: sleeping, zoo, beach, mexican food (none of that in china), and reading time. nice. for those of you who don't know yet, jessica and i have decided to come back to china for another year after we finish this one. we'll still come back to the states in the end of june. we'll stay in the states for about 2months, then head back to ningbo for another year. it looks like we've already talked a few friends into coming back over with us for a year. if any of you would like to, drop a line.
most regularly spoken comment in bali: "if i don't want your sunglasses, why would i want your weed?"
| sooo.......while all of you have been having a nice christmas holiday, we haven't. we worked on xmas eve and won't have any holiday until january 8th, at which time we have six weeks off. not too shabby. i sure am ready to be done with classes. the final exam for my students is an impromptu speech on a topic that they draw out of a hat. i've had two classes take it already, and it's not fun to grade. i'm marking their pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, body language, etc, all in two-and-a-half minutes. some of the speeches are pretty funny, though. anyway, things are going really well here. we do get a three-day weekend for new year's, so jess and i are headed to hangzhou to see the sights and hang out with some of our students there. it's nice to have free tour guides. i should also mention that we've been posting pictures from our stay here at http://community.webshots.com/user/billjessinchina . check it out. holla. | | |
| - It's only been five months. I've been reading up on everyone else's, just too lazy to write myself. Sorry. All of you know that all you have to do is drop me a line and I'll tell you what's happening, so I don't feel too bad. Things rock in China. Jessica's doing great. We're both really enjoying our jobs at Ningbo University. Landon was here for 10 days a few weeks ago, and dad's here now for a week (including xmas!), so that's cool. If any of the rest of you want to come visit, we'll be here waiting. Cliff, we're expecting to see you in March (did mom tell you that Kathryn (sp?) Cherry is coming then, too? you should contact her.). We have a Christmas tree. Can't explain how necessary that was to Jessica. Can't explain how difficult it was to find. Can't explain why I've begun typing with capital letters. i'm going to stop that now. dad, jess, and i went to the yihe ("yee-huh") teahouse downtown this afternoon after "meeting" with the "family" (don't forget who runs china). we love the teahouse. the tea's expensive, but the all-you-can eat buffet is free. we were there for about three hours. dad can put the food down, although his kuaize (chopstick) skills are lacking. i'm about to put a pork loin in to roast. drop a line. it's good to be back. | | |
